Neem Cake in Islamabad: Organic Fertilizer and Soil Pest Protection for Islamabad’s Alkaline Pothohar Soil
Organic Baghbani Neem Cake (Neem Khali / نیم کھلی) – Pure Cold Pressed Granular Organic Fertilizer is a natural soil conditioner and slow-release nutrient source. You can order Organic Baghbani neem cake in 1, 2, 5, 10, and 25 kg weight options. The starting price is Rs 540 per kg, and we deliver everywhere in Pakistan with shipping charged by parcel weight. Islamabad’s calcareous, low-organic-matter soil and hot summers make this organic input an ideal fit to protect roots and improve moisture. For pots, mix 0.5% to 1% of the soil weight, and for garden beds, mix 50 to 80 g per square metre about two weeks before sowing.
1. How neem cake helps Islamabad soil
Organic matter and slow-release nutrients
Our pure cold pressed granular organic fertilizer provides essential organic matter to Islamabad’s depleted soils. It carries a typical N-P-K of about 5-1-2. A lab incubation study demonstrated that about 50% of the nitrogen in neem seed cake became available in about 98 days, with the fastest release in the first 21 days, feeding plants steadily without washing away.
Slower nitrogen loss from urea
Alkaline calcareous soils naturally cause applied urea to convert into gas and escape. A maize pot study conducted in alkaline calcareous soil showed that using neem oil coated urea saved about 25% of the nitrogen. Reported field experiments indicate that applying neem cake coated urea raised overall nitrogen uptake by 4.5% to 19.4%.
Root protection from nematodes
The active compound azadirachtin found in Azadirachta indica (neem) helps protect sensitive plant roots. A tomato pot study showed that applying neem cake at about 1% of the soil weight significantly reduced root-knot nematode infection. The results were best when the fertilizer was mixed in and the soil was left about 20 days before planting.
Traditional use against soil pests
Gardeners traditionally use neem cake to manage soil grubs and deter termites from attacking plant roots. It also acts as an excellent companion to compost. If you are mixing it with worm castings to boost soil structure, use our vermicompost calculator to measure the perfect ratio for your garden beds.
What neem cake does not do
Neem cake does not fix sodic or very salty soil. Treating highly saline or alkali soil requires deep drainage and the application of gypsum. Additionally, you must follow the dosage rules carefully, as a lab incubation at very heavy doses showed that soil salinity rose 8 to 10 times and the pH fell drastically.

Use our free neem cake dosage calculator to quickly determine the exact amount you need for your plants.
Pots, terrace and rooftop gardens
For container gardening, use 0.5% to 1% of the soil weight. A 6 inch pot needs 8 to 15 g, and an 8 inch pot requires 15 to 30 g. A 10 inch pot takes 25 to 50 g, and a 12 inch pot takes 40 to 80 g. Never exceed 1% of the soil weight, and repeat after 2 to 3 months if needed.
Kitchen garden beds
For backyard vegetable beds, apply 50 to 80 g per square metre. Mix the granules into the soil about two weeks before sowing your seeds. One kilogram covers roughly 12 to 20 square metres. If you are dealing with nematode-prone soil, apply about 1% of the soil weight, then leave the soil about 20 days before planting.
Fruit plants
For young fruit plants, apply 250 to 500 g. For mature trees, apply 1 to 2 kg. Apply this dose twice a year by working the granules gently into the soil around the outer root zone and away from the trunk.
3. Common soil and garden problems in Islamabad
Alkaline and calcareous
Pothohar soil About 70% of cultivated soils in Pakistan are calcareous, and the Pothohar plateau in Islamabad shares this trait. Soil testing in the region shows high calcium carbonate content and an alkaline pH ranging from 7.4 to 8.5. This high pH locks up essential micronutrients like iron and zinc, causing stunted growth and yellowing leaves in garden plants.
Critically low organic matter
Soil analysis across the region reveals that active organic matter is extremely low, varying between 0.17% and 0.96%. A lack of organic matter means the soil has a weak structure and struggles to retain moisture. During Islamabad’s hot summer months, this low moisture retention causes plants to dry out rapidly and suffer from heat stress.
Root-knot nematodes and white ants (deemak)
Vegetable growers in the Pothohar region face significant pest pressure from Meloidogyne incognita (root-knot nematode). Surveys show these nematodes are highly prevalent in summer vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, and okra. Additionally, the dry soil conditions in the region encourage termite (white ant, deemak) activity, which damages woody stems and plant roots.
Groundwater depletion
Islamabad’s hydrogeology features alternating layers of clay, shale, and gravel, making natural groundwater recharge very slow. Because of heavy reliance on tubewells, the groundwater table is depleting at a rate of about 1 m per year, particularly in downstream sectors like I-8, I-9, and I-10. Gardeners must therefore improve their soil’s water-holding capacity to conserve water.
4. Islamabad planting calendar with neem cake
Spring (Mid-February to April): Prepare your kitchen garden beds for summer vegetables like tomatoes and okra. Mix the fertilizer into the soil two weeks before sowing to help protect the young roots from nematodes.
Summer (May to June): During the intense heat, rely on the slow-release nutrients and improved soil organic matter to sustain your plants while watering deeply.
Monsoon (July to August): Apply the second yearly dose to your mature fruit trees, allowing the granules to break down gradually in the moist soil.
Autumn (September to October): Prepare your beds for winter vegetables like cabbage and peas, mixing the fertilizer into the alkaline soil to improve nutrient uptake.
5. How to apply neem cake
Calculate your exact required dose using the neem cake dosage calculator to ensure you do not over-apply.
Measure the correct amount of granules for your specific pot size or garden bed area.
Sprinkle the granules over the surface and mix them evenly into the top few inches of the soil.
Ensure the granules are kept away from direct contact with delicate stems and tree trunks.
Water the soil thoroughly so the cold pressed nutrients can begin to break down and feed your roots.
