Neem Cake in Karachi: Organic Fertilizer and Soil Pest Protection for Karachi’s Alkaline Coastal Soil

Organic Baghbani Neem Cake (Neem Khali / نیم کھلی) – Pure Cold Pressed Granular Organic Fertilizer is a natural soil conditioner and slow-release nutrient source. You can order Organic Baghbani neem cake in 1, 2, 5, 10, and 25 kg weight options. The starting price is Rs 540 per kg, and we deliver everywhere in Pakistan with shipping charged by parcel weight. Karachi’s sandy, alkaline coastal soil and highly saline groundwater make this organic input a great fit to help retain moisture and protect plant roots. For pots, mix 0.5% to 1% of the soil weight, and for garden beds, mix 50 to 80 g per square metre about two weeks before sowing.

1. How neem cake helps Karachi soil

Organic matter and slow-release nutrients

Our pure cold pressed granular organic fertilizer adds vital organic matter to Karachi’s fast-draining sandy soils. It provides a typical N-P-K of about 5-1-2. A lab incubation study showed that about 50% of the nitrogen in neem seed cake became available in about 98 days, steadily feeding plants without washing away instantly in the sandy soil.

Slower nitrogen loss from urea

Alkaline calcareous soils naturally cause applied urea to volatilize into gas. A maize pot study conducted in alkaline calcareous soil demonstrated that using neem oil coated urea saved about 25% of the nitrogen. Reported field experiments show that applying neem cake coated urea raised overall nitrogen uptake by 4.5% to 19.4%.

Root protection from nematodes

Azadirachtin, an active compound found in Azadirachta indica (neem), helps defend plant roots. A tomato pot study showed that applying neem cake at about 1% of the soil weight significantly reduced root-knot nematode infection. Results were optimal when the soil was left about 20 days before planting.

Traditional use against soil pests

Coastal gardeners traditionally use neem cake to manage soil grubs and deter termites from feeding on plant roots. It also pairs perfectly with compost to improve sandy soils. If you use earthworm castings to boost water retention, use our vermicompost calculator to determine the exact ratio for your pots or beds.

What neem cake does not do

Neem cake does not fix sodic or very salty soil. Treating highly saline coastal soil requires deep drainage, fresh water flushing, and amendments like gypsum. Never over-apply the fertilizer, as a lab incubation at very heavy doses showed that soil salinity rose 8 to 10 times while the pH fell.

2. How much neem cake to use in Karachi

Check our free neem cake dosage calculator to find the exact measurement for your pots, kitchen garden beds, or fruit trees.

Pots, terrace and rooftop gardens

For pots, use 0.5% to 1% of the soil weight. A 6 inch pot needs 8 to 15 g, and an 8 inch pot takes 15 to 30 g. A 10 inch pot requires 25 to 50 g, and a 12 inch pot takes 40 to 80 g. Never exceed 1% of the soil weight. You can repeat this after 2 to 3 months if needed.

Kitchen garden beds

For garden beds, mix 50 to 80 g per square metre into the soil about two weeks before sowing your seeds. One kilogram covers roughly 12 to 20 square metres. For nematode-prone soil, use about 1% of the soil weight, then leave the soil about 20 days before planting.

Fruit plants

For young fruit plants, apply 250 to 500 g. For mature trees, apply 1 to 2 kg. Apply this dose twice a year by working it into the soil around the outer root zone and away from the trunk.

3. Karachi planting calendar with neem cake

  • Spring (Mid-February to March): Prepare your beds for summer vegetables. Because Karachi’s winter is mild, spring planting can start early. Mix the fertilizer two weeks prior to sowing.

  • Summer (April to June): Rely on the slow-release nutrients and increased organic matter to help the sandy soil retain moisture during peak heat.

  • Monsoon (July to August): Apply the second dose to your fruit trees, as the monsoon rains will help break down the granules naturally.

  • Autumn/Winter (October to November): Prepare the soil for winter crops. Mix the granules into the alkaline soil to help retain nutrients.

4. How to apply neem cake

  1. Use the neem cake dosage calculator to ensure you measure the correct dose for your space.

  2. Measure the exact amount of granular fertilizer required.

  3. Mix the granules evenly into the top few inches of your garden soil or potting mix.

  4. Keep the granules away from direct contact with soft stems and tree trunks.

  5. Water the soil well so the cold pressed nutrients begin working.

Common soil and garden problems in Karachi

Alkaline, sandy coastal soil

Karachi’s coastal environment results in soil that is very sandy, highly erodible, and alkaline in nature. This alkaline soil (pH often between 7.5 and 8.5) binds essential micronutrients like iron and zinc, while the sandy texture causes water and applied nutrients to drain away too quickly before roots can absorb them.

Critically low organic matter

Soil tests across the region show that active organic matter is critically low, often well below 1%. A severe lack of organic matter means the sandy soil cannot hold moisture effectively. During the extreme heat of the pre-monsoon summer, garden beds and rooftop pots dry out very rapidly, placing plants under severe heat stress.

Root-knot nematodes and white ants (deemak)

Vegetable gardens in Karachi, particularly in the sandy agricultural belts of the Malir district, face heavy pressure from Meloidogyne incognita (root-knot nematode). These microscopic pests cause root galls on summer vegetables. Furthermore, the warm coastal climate promotes termite (white ant, deemak) activity, which attacks woody plant stems and root systems.

Highly saline groundwater

Many households in Karachi rely on groundwater to irrigate their gardens due to piped water shortages. Geochemical data reveals that coastal aquifers are highly saline, often containing total dissolved solids (TDS) far above safe limits. Watering with this brackish water leads to rapid salt accumulation in potted plants and garden beds.

Karachi’s soil and climate at a glance

  • City: Karachi is located in Sindh, Pakistan, situated on the coast of the Arabian Sea between the Malir River and the Lyari River. It has a low elevation and a population exceeding 20.3 million (2023 census).

  • Climate: The city features a hot desert climate (Köppen BWh) with highly unpredictable precipitation and distinct seasons including a mild winter, an intense pre-monsoon summer, the monsoon, and a post-monsoon autumn.

  • Temperature: Summers are long and hot, with average highs peaking at about 35.2°C in May, while January winters are very mild, averaging a 25.8°C high and a 10.4°C low.

  • Rainfall: Karachi receives roughly 145 mm to 200 mm of precipitation annually, heavily concentrated during the July and August monsoon.

  • Humidity: Because of the Arabian Sea, relative humidity remains high year-round, making the summer heat feel more intense.

  • Soil: The coastal and alluvial soils are predominantly sandy to sandy loam, alkaline (pH often exceeding 8.0), highly calcareous, and severely deficient in organic matter.

  • Irrigation water: Piped water from the Hub Dam and Keenjhar Lake is often insufficient, forcing high reliance on tubewells; however, the local groundwater is largely brackish and highly saline.
