What Is Mustard Cake Fertilizer? (سرسوں کی کھل کیا ہے؟)
Meaning of Mustard Cake Fertilizer in Urdu is “سرسوں کی کھل” سرسوں کے بیجوں سے تیل نکالنے کے بعد بچنے والی قدرتی کھاد. Once the oil is pressed out, the solid residue keeps much of the seed’s protein, which is why gardeners value it as a nitrogen-rich plant feed. Ours is de-oiled, dry, granular and untreated, and it is 100% natural.
The granules are easy to measure and mix into soil. Like any de-oiled cake, it carries the characteristic pungent mustard smell, and it is a raw cake, not a finished compost, so it needs a short waiting period before seeds go into the soil (explained below).

Why Does Your Garden Need It?
Pakistan’s summer heat breaks down organic matter in garden mitti (مٹی) quickly, monsoon rain washes nitrogen away, and many gardens have either heavy clay that packs hard or sandy soil that holds little. Plants in these soils often run short of nitrogen, and older leaves turn pale while growth slows. A slow-release feed such as this oil cake tops up nitrogen and adds organic matter that helps soil hold on to nutrients. What Does It Do for Your Plants?
- Supplies nitrogen. An ICAR table lists mustard cake at roughly 5% nitrogen, 1.5% phosphorus and 1% potassium on a dry-weight basis (ICAR nutrient table). Sellers quote different figures, so treat these as general averages, not a lab test of each batch.
- Gives slow-release nitrogen for leafy growth. Oil cakes break down slowly, so nitrogen reaches plants over weeks rather than all at once.
- Adds organic matter that can encourage soil microbes and help soil hold nutrients.
- Brings smaller amounts of phosphorus and potassium alongside the nitrogen.
- May help against some soil pests and weed seedlings. Research on mustard meal shows this effect, but at rates far higher than a home garden uses. The cake is not a pesticide.
Results depend on your soil, your plants and your watering.
Where Should You Use It and How Much?
These amounts are cautious starting points based on the low rates used in research trials. Adjust them to your soil, weather and plants.
| Use | Starting amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Potted vegetables, flowers and fruit plants (گملا) | About 1 tablespoon (10–15 g) per large pot of 8–10 kg soil | Mix into the top 5 cm and water well. Repeat no sooner than every 6 weeks |
| Vegetable beds (سبزیاں) | 100–150 g per square metre | Mix into the top 5–10 cm of moist soil, then wait 2–4 weeks before sowing seeds or transplanting |
| Fruit trees and shrubs (پھلدار درخت) | 100–150 g per square metre under the canopy | Established plants only. Keep a few cm away from the trunk, scratch in lightly and water |
| Compost heap (کمپوسٹ) | A thin sprinkle between layers of dry leaves | Acts as a nitrogen source; keep the heap damp |
| Liquid feed | 1 part cake soaked in 10 parts water for 24 hours, then diluted 1:10 | Water the soil only, never the leaves. Test on one plant first and prepare it outdoors because of the smell |
Do not use it in seed trays, around cuttings or seedlings, or let it touch stems or fresh roots.
How Is It Different from Other Soil Feeds?
| Soil feed | Best for | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Neem cake | Soil-pest control and feeding | Another oil cake, better known for its pest-repelling reputation; the mustard cake is used mainly as a nitrogen-rich feed |
| Vermicompost | Gentle, ready-to-use feeding and potting mixes | Already processed by worms, so there is no waiting period; the ICAR table puts it well below mustard cake in nitrogen |
| Organic compost | Soil building and mulching | Decomposed and ready to use; feeds more gently and adds bulk |
| Cow dung compost | Pots, beds and top dressing | Properly decomposed with no waiting period; the cake is a stronger, raw nitrogen source |
How Does It Work?
A de-oiled cake is what remains of the seed after pressing: protein, fibre and minerals. According to Wikipedia, this residue is used as a fertiliser for fruit, flower and vegetable crops. Soil microbes break the protein down slowly into forms plants can take up, which is why the nitrogen arrives gradually. Mustard seed also contains compounds called glucosinolates. When the cake gets wet in soil they break down into volatile compounds that can slow weed seedlings and some soil pests, and also germinating crop seeds. That is why you should mix the cake in, water it and wait 2–4 weeks before sowing.
How Do You Use It?
Before You Start
Water the bed or pot lightly so the soil is moist. Decide whether you are feeding established plants, which can be fed straight away, or preparing a bed for seeds, which needs the 2–4 week wait.
Step by Step
In Pots and Containers
- Measure about 1 tablespoon per large pot of 8–10 kg soil.
- Scratch it into the top 5 cm of moist soil, keeping it off the stem.
- Water well so the cake starts breaking down.
- Do not repeat for at least 6 weeks, and do not sow seeds in the same pot for 2–4 weeks.
In Garden Beds and Around Trees
- Spread 100–150 g per square metre over moist soil.
- Mix it into the top 5–10 cm. Under trees, scratch it in lightly a few cm away from the trunk.
- Water thoroughly.
- Wait 2–4 weeks before sowing seeds or transplanting seedlings into a prepared bed.
As a Liquid Feed
- Soak 1 part of the cake in 10 parts water for 24 hours, in a container outdoors with a loose lid.
- Stir, then dilute 1 part of the liquid with 10 parts fresh water.
- Pour it around the base of established plants and never spray it on leaves.
- Test on one plant first and wait a few days before feeding the rest.
Safety and Storage
Wear gloves and wash your hands afterwards. It is a fertiliser and not for eating, so keep it away from children, pets and livestock. Mix the granules into the soil or cover them with a thin layer of soil or mulch, so the smell does not attract animals. Store it dry, tightly closed and away from direct sunlight so it does not turn rancid or mouldy. If leaves curl or brown after use, stop and flush the soil with water.
