How to use the fertilizer quantity calculator
- Pick your crop or plant, from wheat and cotton to tomato, mango and lawn grass.
- Enter your area and choose the unit: marla, kanal, acre, square feet, square metres or hectare.
- Choose your soil type and how strong the soil is. Pick Weak if it has never been manured.
- Choose an approach: chemical only, balanced, mostly organic or fully organic.
- Read your plan: the nutrient target, what to buy and when to apply it. Order the products on WhatsApp if you need them.
What do the NPK numbers on a fertilizer bag mean?
Three numbers on a bag show the percentage of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P₂O₅) and potash (K₂O) inside. Nitrogen drives leaf and shoot growth, phosphate builds roots and early growth, and potash improves fruit quality and stress tolerance. The calculator uses these typical values. Brands differ slightly, so check the label on your bag.
Fertilizer | N-P-K | Main nutrient |
|---|---|---|
Urea | 46-0-0 | Nitrogen |
DAP | 18-46-0 | Phosphate and nitrogen |
SOP (Sulphate of Potash) | 0-0-50 | Potash, chloride free |
MOP (Muriate of Potash) | 0-0-60 | Potash |
Neem cake | about 5-1-1.4 | Slow nitrogen, protects against soil pests |
Vermicompost | about 1.5-1-1 | Slow nutrients, improves soil |
Organic or chemical fertilizer?
Chemical fertilizer gives nutrients quickly and costs less per kilogram of nutrient. Organic fertilizer such as neem cake and vermicompost releases nutrients slowly, improves soil structure and feeds soil life. Many growers combine them: the Balanced option in the calculator takes about 35% of the nitrogen from organic products and the rest from Urea and DAP. Neem cake also helps against termites and nematodes. See the neem cake calculator, the vermicompost calculator and the soil mulch calculator for exact quantities.
When and how to apply fertilizer
- Split nitrogen into two or three doses instead of one. The schedule in your result shows the stages for your crop.
- Apply phosphate and potash at sowing or planting, because they move slowly in soil.
- Keep fertilizer about 5 cm away from stems and irrigate after applying.
- Mix neem cake and vermicompost into the top soil before sowing, and water well.
- For trees, spread fertilizer under the edge of the canopy, not against the trunk.
How much urea and DAP do I need per acre, kanal or marla?
It depends on the crop, the soil and the area. For wheat on average loam soil, the calculator gives about 90 kg of Urea, 76 kg of DAP and 33 kg of MOP per acre. That is about 11 kg of Urea and 9.5 kg of DAP per kanal. Choose your own crop and area in the calculator for an exact figure.
How much fertilizer does a 5 marla vegetable garden need?
For a mixed kitchen garden with chemical fertilizer only, a 5 marla plot needs about 3.7 kg of Urea, 2.7 kg of DAP and 2.5 kg of SOP per crop. With the Balanced option, part of the nitrogen comes from vermicompost and neem cake instead.
How are marla and kanal converted?
One marla is 272.25 square feet, one kanal is 20 marla (5,445 square feet) and one acre is 8 kanal (43,560 square feet). Some districts use a different local marla. If yours differs, enter the area in square feet.
What do numbers like 46-0-0 and 18-46-0 mean?
They show the percentage of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P₂O₅) and potash (K₂O) in the bag. Urea is 46-0-0, so 100 kg of Urea holds 46 kg of nitrogen. DAP is 18-46-0, so it supplies both phosphate and some nitrogen.
Can neem cake and vermicompost replace chemical fertilizer?
Partly or fully. Organic products release nutrients slowly, so the calculator counts about half of their nitrogen in the first season. A fully organic plan needs a large amount of material, so Balanced is a good place to start. Neem cake also helps against termites and nematodes.
How and when should I apply fertilizer?
Split it as shown in the schedule of your result. Apply on moist soil, keep it about 5 cm from stems and irrigate afterwards. Mix neem cake and vermicompost into the top soil before sowing or planting.
Does this calculator replace a soil test?
No. The crop figures are general values for irrigated land. A soil test from your nearest agriculture department laboratory gives a more exact plan. Enter its recommendation under "I have soil test results".
Can I use the fertilizer calculator outside Pakistan?
Yes. Switch the area to square feet, square metres or hectares and the weights to pounds. Urea, DAP and potash are sold worldwide with the same N-P-K analysis.
