What Is Wood Sawdust Powder? (لکڑی کا برادہ کیا ہے؟)
Wood sawdust powder (لکڑی کا برادہ) is the fine, soft dust left when natural timber is cut and milled. Ours comes from seasoned hardwood, is untreated and is sold fresh, which means it is carbon-rich, absorbs moisture well and breaks down slowly. Gardeners use it as a thin surface mulch, as a “brown” ingredient in compost and, in limited amounts, as bedding in worm bins and animal sheds. It is not a fertiliser, and it is not a potting mix on its own.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is it? | Fresh, untreated sawdust from natural seasoned hardwood, fine grade |
| What does it do? | Covers the soil to slow evaporation and weeds, adds carbon to compost, soaks up moisture as bedding |
| Is it a fertiliser? | No. It holds very little nitrogen and can tie some up while it breaks down |
| How much should I use? | Mulch layer of about 2–3 cm; in compost, roughly 1 part sawdust to 3–4 parts nitrogen-rich material by volume |
| Can it go straight into soil? | Not in large amounts. Use it on the surface, or compost it first |
| What is it not for? | Seed starting, seedling trays, rabbit and guinea-pig bedding |
| What does it cost? | PKR 110 for 1 kg, with larger packs about 10% cheaper per kg |
Why Do Gardeners Need Sawdust?
Bare soil loses water fast in Pakistan’s summer heat, and weeds move in as soon as the monsoon humidity arrives. A loose covering of sawdust slows evaporation, shades the surface and makes weeding easier. For compost makers the problem is the opposite: kitchen scraps, grass cuttings and manure are wet and nitrogen-rich, and the heap turns soggy and smelly without a dry carbon source. Sawdust supplies that carbon in a form that is easy to mix. It must be used the right way, though, and the sections below explain how.
What Does Sawdust Do for Plants and Compost?
- Helps slow water loss from the soil surface in hot weather
- Helps keep weeds down when spread as a continuous layer
- Buffers surface soil from sudden temperature swings
- Soaks up excess moisture and odour in wet compost and manure heaps
- Adds carbon (“brown” material) so a compost heap can balance its nitrogen-rich scraps
- Breaks down slowly into organic matter at the soil surface
- Works as part of the bedding mix in a worm bin (کیچوے), in limited amounts
Where Can You Use It, and How Much?
The amounts below are cautious starting points, not fixed rules. Adjust them to your soil, weather and plants.
| Use | Starting amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mulch around vegetables, shrubs and fruit trees (ملچ) | Thin layer, about 2–3 cm (roughly 1 inch) | Spread on top only; do not dig it in. Keep it a few cm away from stems and trunks. Add a nitrogen source first (see steps below) |
| Garden and nursery pathways | 3–5 cm layer | Plants are not growing in the path, so nitrogen tie-up matters less. Top up as it thins |
| Compost heap (کمپوسٹ) | About 1 part sawdust to 3–4 parts nitrogen-rich material, by volume | Mix evenly with kitchen scraps, grass cuttings or fresh manure and keep the heap as damp as a wrung-out sponge. If the heap will not heat up, use less sawdust |
| Wet manure or slurry heap | A few layers between the wet material | Soaks up moisture and odour; turn the heap occasionally |
| Worm bin bedding (کیچوے) | A minor share, roughly 1 part sawdust to 3 parts other bedding | Mix with shredded cardboard, paper or loose cocopeat and dampen first. Do not use it as the only bedding. Pair with red wiggler worms |
| Poultry shed floors and larger livestock bedding | Dry layer over a dry floor | Use only while dry and mould-free, in a well-ventilated shed. Remove wet or caked patches. Not suitable for rabbits or guinea pigs |
| Heavy or sandy garden soil (بھاری مٹی) | Compost it first, then mix in a small share | Fresh sawdust dug straight into soil can starve plants of nitrogen |
| Mushroom growing (advanced) | Follow a mushroom-growing guide | Hardwood sawdust is a common base for oyster and shiitake substrates, but it must be supplemented and pasteurised or sterilised first. This page does not give a recipe |
How Does Fine Sawdust Compare with Other Materials?
| Material | Best for | How it differs from sawdust |
|---|---|---|
| Fine sawdust (this product) | Cheap carbon for compost, thin surface mulch | Packs down easily and ties up nitrogen faster than coarser material |
| Rice husk | Aeration, mulch, compost bulking | Coarser and slower to break down; keeps a heap more open |
| Rice husk ash | Potassium and silica source | A mildly alkaline soil amendment, not a mulch |
| Loose cocopeat | Water-holding growing media, worm bedding, seed starting | Gentler and more consistent for pots and seedlings; sawdust is not |
| Vermicompost | Feeding soil and pots | Ready to feed plants; sawdust does not feed them |
| Potting soil mix | Filling pots and containers | A ready-to-use mix; sawdust is an ingredient, not a substitute |
How Does Sawdust Work in Soil and Compost?
Sawdust is mostly cellulose and lignin, so it is rich in carbon and very low in nitrogen. Typical figures quoted by extension services put its carbon-to-nitrogen ratio somewhere between about 200:1 and 500:1, while a healthy compost heap works best near 25–35:1. The microbes that break sawdust down need nitrogen to do it. If the sawdust is mixed into soil they draw nitrogen from the soil, and plants can turn pale until the wood has decayed. Fine sawdust has a large surface area, so this happens faster than with wood chips, and hardwood in particular tends to call for extra nitrogen. On the surface, the effect on roots below is much smaller, and in a compost heap the nitrogen comes from the scraps and manure you mix in. One more point: a thick, dry layer of fine sawdust can crust over and shed water, so keep the layer thin and fluff it from time to time.
How Do You Use It Step by Step?
How Do You Use It as Mulch?
- Water the soil well first. Mulch holds moisture in; it does not add any.
- Sprinkle a nitrogen source over the area, such as aged manure or a nitrogen fertiliser (کھاد) at the rate on its label.
- Spread the sawdust about 2–3 cm thick, keeping a few cm clear of stems and trunks.
- Lightly dampen the surface so the fine powder does not blow away or crust.
- Rake or fluff the layer every few weeks and top up as it thins.
- Watch your plants. Pale or yellowing older leaves can be a sign that nitrogen is running low, so feed them.
How Do You Use It in Compost?
- Mix the sawdust evenly with kitchen scraps, grass cuttings or manure instead of leaving it in a thick layer.
- Keep the heap damp but not dripping, and turn it now and then.
- If it smells sour or wet, add more sawdust. If it stays cold and slow, add more green or manure.
Safety and Storage
Fine dust can irritate eyes and nose, so dampen it and wear a dust mask when emptying a full bag. Keep it away from open flames. Store it dry, because damp sawdust can turn mouldy.
